Recognising Anxiety Symptoms

Recognising the Symptoms of Anxiety – A Guide by Behavioural Freedom

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, but when it becomes persistent and overwhelming, it can interfere with daily life. At Behavioural Freedom, we are committed to helping individuals identify and manage anxiety effectively. Recognising the symptoms of anxiety early can be the first step toward regaining control and achieving emotional well-being.

Common Physical Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety often manifests through physical symptoms of anxiety, which can sometimes be mistaken for other health conditions. Some of the most common physical signs include:

  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Excessive sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Gastrointestinal issues such as nausea or stomach pain
  • Muscle tension or aches

Emotional and Psychological Signs of Anxiety

Anxiety can significantly impact emotional and mental health, often leading to distressing thoughts and feelings. These may include:

  • Constant worry or fear, even without a clear cause
  • Restlessness or feeling on edge
  • Difficulty concentrating or racing thoughts
  • Irritability or heightened sensitivity
  • Feeling overwhelmed or a sense of impending doom

Behavioural Symptoms of Anxiety to Watch For

Changes in behaviour can also indicate anxiety, particularly if they interfere with daily activities and responsibilities. Common behavioural symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Avoidance of certain situations or places
  • Difficulty sleeping or experiencing insomnia
  • Increased reliance on unhealthy coping mechanisms (e.g., alcohol, overeating)
  • Procrastination or difficulty completing tasks

When to Seek Help for Anxiety

While occasional anxiety is a normal part of life, chronic or intense anxiety that disrupts daily activities may require professional support. Seeking help from a qualified therapist or counsellor can provide the necessary tools to manage and reduce anxiety effectively.

How I Treat Anxiety

At Behavioural Freedom, I use a skills-based model for treating anxiety. During our sessions, I will teach you relaxation techniques and helpful ways in which you can fundamentally and positively change the way you behave, think and act. It’s also important to note here that you can’t be stressed or suffer from anxiety when you are in a relaxed state. The skills you’ll learn during your time with me will be vital to both your on-going treatment and perhaps more so as you leave my care.

A combination of Applied Relaxation and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is considered by the British Medical Journal to be one of the most effective therapies to alleviate anxiety and put you on a path to having a positive mind-set and being able to live life to the fullest, free of worries. By combining both and adding in the element of hypnosis, I believe this is the most effective, pragmatic and relevant approach to the treatment of anxiety.
